In August, AIME held its annual Board meeting in Alexandria, VA and hosted talks from sister Societies, trade associations, and the new administration. The new Board (see www.aimehq.org/offtrust.cfm) was installed. Note that President-Elect, DeAnn Craig, will be the first woman President of AIME when she is installed at the August 2010 meeting in Colorado Springs, CO. We look forward to continuing emphasis on collaborative efforts in which membership can be actively involved to make a larger impact for the profession and our worldwide community. 2009 initiatives include participation on the:
• engineering Founder Societies’ Carbon Management team, sponsoring two workshops later this year,
• Engineering Solutions for Sustainability: Materials and Resources workshop deliverables, and
• the Emerging Leaders Alliance training.

As we continue to push through challenging economic times, AIME, like many other organizations, is shifting its focus slightly to ensure that it can effectively support core functions. AIChE is heading up a cross-disciplinary group working on ways to jointly influence education and decision-making related to carbon emissions measurement, control, and reduction. The technical team of experts is a Gaps and Barriers workshop in Baltimore, MD October 21-22 and a GHG Measurement workshop in Scottsdale, AZ December 7-8. AIME hosted distinguished speakers and participants from industry, NGOs, and governmental agencies at a sustainability workshop July 22-24, 2009, at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland to discuss how engineering can best help address societal challenges in the area of energy, recycling, transportation, housing, food and water, and health. TMS is leading a joint engineering Society effort for AIME to deliver world-class leadership training and an online community for emerging leaders in our professions. The project is supported by a grant from the United Engineering Foundation. The first event, held October 9-11, 2008 in Pittsburgh, PA, was a resounding success. This year includes development of on-line training to accompany the capstone course October 8-10, 2009 in Reston, VA for the 50 participants. Deadline October 6 for Lemelson-MIT $100,000 Sustainability and $500,000 Inventor Awards

The $100,000 Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability celebrates individuals whose inventions and innovations enhance economic opportunity and community well-being in developing and/or developed countries, while protecting and restoring the natural environment. The award seeks to further foster inventive work focused on sustainable challenges, and promotes inventive role models who can inspire young people to pursue creative lives and careers through invention. Nominate a candidate.

The $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize is awarded to outstanding mid-career inventors who have developed a patented product or process of significant value to society, which could be or has been adopted for practical use. Individuals are awarded the prize mid-career, when both the recognition and the cash award can be of significant benefit to their future creativity and productivity; at the same time, recipients are presented as role models who can inspire young people to pursue creative lives and careers through invention. United Nations Major Group Participation Guidelines for CSD-18 Released

The guidelines for participation of the Major Groups in Commission on Sustainable Development-18 are now available on the Internet at www.un.org/esa/dsd/dsd_aofw_mg/mg_csdguid.shtml. The CSD-18/19 cycle will focus on the thematic areas of transport, chemicals, waste management, mining, and the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns.

United Nations Seeking Public Comment on Marrakech Process for CSD-19

The purpose of the Marrakech Process is to elaborate a draft 10-year Framework of Programmes (10YFP) on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) which will then be negotiated by countries at the 19th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development in 2011.
