Dr. Dave Osborne is a coal technology specialist with extensive global experience in coal preparation, quality assurance and technical marketing through direct involvement in all facets of the subject area. Internationally renowned with accredited engineering status in Australia and Europe, he has numerous technical publications to his credit and memberships and active participation in international professional institutions and organisations. He joined the coal industry in 1959 as an apprentice draftsman before being trained as a mining/processing engineer at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and graduating with a BS honours and later a PhD in 1970. Since then he has lived and worked in South Africa, Canada, Indonesia and Australia where he now lives in the Brisbane area with his wife Hazel, an accomplished musician and bagpiper! He regularly visits the US, working for Somerset International, an Australian arm of a US parent company as Director Research and Technology. His has been an SME member for over 35 years.
