AIME DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal in
1987

For outstanding technical contributions in the areas of reservoir behavior analysis and deepwater engineering; for industry leadership in offshore development, exploration and production economics, enhanced recovery technology, and engineering management, and for tireless contributions and visionary leadership that contributed significantly to the breadth and depth of Society operations and activities.

Donald G. Russell is President of United Meridian Corporation in Dallas. He retired in 1987 as President of Shell Development Company, where is was responsible for all research and development efforts. Mr. Russell joined Shell in 1955 as a petroleum engineer, and during his thirty-two-year career with that company his assignments included engineering, research, management, economics, and computer research. Mr. Russell holds a B.S. from Sam Houston State University and an M.S. from the University of Oklahoma, both in Mathematics and Physics.

Mr. Russell has served in numerous leadership positions in SPE and in industry organizations. In the early seventies he was a member of the Boards of both SPE and AIME, and served as President of SPE In 1974. He represented SPE on the OTC Executive Committee from 1982 to 1985, and served as Chairman in 1984 and 1985. Mr. Russell chaired the API Marine Safety Executive Committee in 1985-1986 and was a member of the NAE Peer Committee for Chemical/Petroleum Engineer¬ ing in 1984-1986. He is currently Treasurer of the SPE Foundation and the 1988 AIME President-Elect Designate.

An Honorary Member of both AIME and SPE, Mr. Russell was named an SPE Distinguished Member in 1983. He was awarded the SPE Cedric K. Ferguson Medal in 1962 and the John Carll Award in 1980.
