Outstanding service to SME through his leadership in the M&E Division, tenure on the Board of Directors, Strategic Committees, and for his leadership in developing and establishing the new Ph.D. Fellowship and Career Grant programs to further the sustainability of all mining and metallurgical engineering programs at U.S. based schools.

Hugh Miller is an Associate Professor in the Mining Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines, where he teaches courses and conducts research in areas related to project feasibility/valuation, mine design and operations, occupational safety & health, waterjet technology, and excavation engineering. Before joining CSM in 2005, he spent 6 years teaching at the University of Arizona and was the Director of the San Xavier Mining Laboratory and Co-Director of the International Center for Mine Health, Safety, and Environment. Prior to entering academia, Hugh worked 13 years for several mining and engineering companies, including 5 years as Director of Operations for International Engineering Technology. Hugh has been active in several professional organizations including SME, the American Exploration and Mining Association, and the Waterjet Technology Association. He was elected as an SME Distinguished Member in 2012. Hugh received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Colorado School of Mines.
