Joseph W. Leonard III is Professor of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky, Lexington From 1982 to 1986 Mr. Leonard served as Chairman of the Mining Engineering Department, Senior Research Fellow in the Institute for Mining and Minerals Research and Executive Director of the Mining Engineering Foundation. For twenty years prior to moving to Kentucky, Mr. Leonard held a variety of positions at West Virginia University including Director of the Coal Research Bureau, Professor of Mining Engineering, Director of the Mining and Industrial Extension Service and William N. Poundstone Research Professor. He received his S.S. in Mining Engineering in 1953 and an M.S. 1n Mineral Preparation 1n 1958, both from The Pennsylvania State University. Author-editor of the 3rd, 4th and 5th editions of Coal Preparation, Mr. Leonard has singly or jointly published more than 100 papers and holds 25 foreign and domestic patents.

An active member of the Society of Mining Engineers, Mr. Leonard has served for 16years as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Central Appalachian Section. He was the recipient of the first Howard N. Eavenson Award in 1969 and was named a Distinguished Member of SME in 1980 Mr. Leonard's other recent professional activities include Chairman, National Academy of Science/National Academy of Engineering Clean Coal Delegation to China in 1985 and Member of the Board. Electric Power Research Institute Coal Quality Development Center.
