Mervyn A. Upham

AIME Charles F. Rand Memorial Gold Medal* in
1989

Awarded in recognition of exceptional merit as an executive managing successful and profitable mineral developments and operations in base and precious metals, industrial minerals and uranium in North America.

Mervyn A. Upham is Chairman of the Board of Discovery West Corp. in Toronto. He received a B.Sc. from Mount Allison University and a B.Sc. in Mining from Queen's University. For the past forty years Mr. Upham has been actively involved in developing and operating new mines and plants. He was in charge of development and operation of the first uranium mine developed in Elliott Lake. Ontario in 1955- 1957 and was Operation Manager in charge of the development of the first potash mine in Saskatchewan in 1960-1962. Since that time he has served in positions of responsibility with a number of companies. He was named President of International Mineral and Chemical Corporation (Canada) Ltd. and President of International Mineral and Chemical Resource Development Group in 1979, and Chairman of the Board of Kilborn Limited in 1986.

Mr. Upham has been an active member of several professional societies including the Society of Mining Engineers. the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, UK. He has served as the President of the Mining Association of Canada. Among his honors. Mr. Upham was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire and Knight of the Order of Orange Nassau, Holland. He received the INCO Medal from CIM in 1979.
