Thomas C. Wilder

Thomas C. Wilder is presently a senior metallurgist at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Ledgemont Laboratory in Lexington, Massachusetts. Born in Boston in 1935, he received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Bowdoin College in 1956. In 1959 he earned an M.S. (major in metallurgy) from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and, in 1962, an Sc.D. in metallurgy from the same institution.

While at M.I.T., Mr. Wilder studied under Professor John F. Elliott. Both his graduate theses dealt with the measurement of the thermodynamic properties of binary and ternary liquid alloys of aluminum. In his present work, Mr. Wilder is concerned with the measurement of thermodynamic properties at high temperatures, with the equilibrium studies emphasing the extractive metallurgy of copper and associated metals, and with low-temperature electrochemistry of copper, particularly as applied to electro-refining.

The Rossiter W. Raymond Memorial Award was established in 1945 to honor one of the Institute's founders, who also served as president and secretary. It consists of $100 and a Certificate recognizing the best paper published by AIME and written by a member under 33 years of age. Papers are judged on the basis of technical content, proficient presentation, and fluency of style.
