For his tremendous contributions to the health, safety and productivity performance of coal mines in the diverse areas of subsidence, ground control, ventilation and tunneling

Dr. Singh was a pioneer in the fields of mine subsidence and high-pressure water-jet coal breakage and developed criteria for mining under water. His ventilation research encompassed use of foam for dust control in longwall shearers. At SME, Madan was presented the Eavenson and Rock Mechanics Awards, inducted as Distinguished Member, and the Legion of Honor. He served as director of the Society and as chair of the Coal and Energy Division, the Underground Ventilation committee, the Chicago and Maricopa Sections, and was conferred the Herbert Hoover Award by the Washington, DC chapter. He chaired two AIME committees and served on the Washington Award committee. For the National Academies he served on the Rock Mechanics and Tunneling Technology committees and was participant for three reports. At Penn State he was bestowed the Robert Stefanko Distinguished Achievement Award and designated a Centennial Fellow. He is a distinguished alumnus of IIT(ISM), Dhanbad.
